ERTMS e-learning

European Rail Traffic Management System is a silent revolution in railway safety. It will ultimately shake the fundamentals of how we progress with railway transport, enhancing capacity, safety, and introducing a highly efficient and attractive transport options for customers and to make the most of the opportunities offered by digital transformation.

This website is for anyone who wants to learn about ERTMS. It is free and registration is not required.

The first e-learning module is now available. The module focuses on the basic principles of Railway safety and signaling.

Future

A further four modules are planned. These will enhance the learners ERTMS knowledge in more detail from the perspective of four main stakeholders; the train driver, the dispatcher, the rolling stock fleet owner and the rail infrastructure manager.

The development of these modules is in progress with support from the UIC Expertise Development Programme.

Module 1

Content

The first module focuses on the basic principles of Railway safety and signaling with themes such as:

  • Principles of Command Control and Signaling
  • Traffic management and capacity
  • System architecture
  • ERTMS levels 3, 2, 1 and STM.

Module 2

Content

The second module – Drivers Module – focuses on ERTMS from the drivers view and has seven main themes:

  • DMI indications
  • Start of mission (SOM)
  • Temporary Speed Restriction (TSR)
  • On Sight (OS)
  • Staff Responsible (SR)
  • Shunting (SH) and Temporary Shunting Area (TSA)
  • Level Transition
